Spotlight on Excellence
I want to thank two of our 3rd grade teachers for sharing a spectacular piece of student work with me. Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Bugli helped our young students learn and excel in a Wit and Wisdom Assessment. Here is the assignment and the student’s writing. – He even made it interactive with hyperlinks!
“Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be an immigrant? Allen Say shows ways that immigrants feel similar & different. Would you like to learn more?
Masako and Grandfather were similar because they both miss their homeland. Masako was in California and moved to Yokohama when her parents wanted to go back to their homelands. She missed the city life of San Francisco. Grandfather started in Japan and moved to San Francisco Bay Area. He missed Japan, so he took his family back there when he was older. Both miss their homelands deeply. In conclusion it CAN be fun and also not fun to move to a new place.
There were also differences between Grandfather and May’s experiences. In Grandfather’s journey, Grandfather is happy wherever he goes. For example in San Francisco he likes the rivers and mountains because they remind him of home. In Tea with Milk, Masako has to work hard to find happiness. At first she hates learning Japanese and their “Young ♀ways” like arranging flowers, wearing kimonos, sitting on the floor, and green tea. She decides to go to Osaka to get a job. She feels more at home there and she meets Joseph Say. She ends up making it her new home and having a child named Allen in Yokohama.
Those are some ways Masako and Grandfather’s experiences were the same and different. “ (3rd grade student)
Shout Outs:
- I want to thank Amy Sanderson (LINKS Tutor) and Alexandra Hayoz-Laverdiere (Social Studies Teacher) for the work they are doing on the Profile of a Learner at the High School. They are working directly with our students and putting their voices at the center of this work. The Profile of a Learner will define what we want our students to know and be able to do by the end of their Georgetown Public Schools career. A huge Shout Out to both!
- A parent reached out to me to share the following: “This morning, my husband and I attended an initial special education meeting for our son at GMHS. We were incredibly impressed by the professionalism, expertise, and thorough understanding demonstrated by Ms. Valli, Ms. Lamy, Ms. Murray, and Ms. Patti White-Lambright regarding our son’s strengths and needs. Their dedication and hard work deserve recognition, and we sincerely appreciate their insightful discussions and professional demeanor.”
