Spotlight on Excellence
This weekend Alexandra Hayoz-Leverdiere accompanied 29 Georgetown High School students to the 40 hour Model United Nations simulation in Boston. These students worked diligently to solve problems, work collaboratively and think critically about some profound and challenging topics. A few examples include the Sudan Crisis, the War of the Roses, the United Nations Trade and Development Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization and the 1910 Mexican Revolution. It is an honor and a privilege to see our students step outside of their comfort zone and tackle these challenges head on. Shout out to our award winner Julia Halmen. She won an award for her position paper on the Mozambican Civil War. Congrats Julia!
I also want to thank Tania Cadieux and Emma Kennedy for giving up their weekend to help chaperone this trip and make it possible for our students to attend!

Shout Outs:
- From the student-led Portrait of a Graduate team: “We would like to thank all the parents, community members, students and teachers who were involved with the interview process for our Portrait of a Graduate initiative. We value your input and the feedback you provided us. We are excited to continue the process and, once again, deeply appreciate your participation and time you took out of your day to be interviewed”.
- Michelle Brock, MSHS Librarian, had Linnea Hartsuyker, author of the Half Drowned King, talk with our High School Creative Writing class and Mythology class. The students were very engaged with her talk. Thank you Michelle for constantly advancing our students’ literary experiences.
- When veteran teachers are supporting new teachers their growth happens at a faster rate. A colleague wants to thank many veteran MS teachers including, Ted Schruender, Sherri Pittella and Christine Fogarty. “Sherri, Ted and Christine have been working to support new teachers by observing them and giving feedback or being observed themselves by peers. Thank you for this collaboration with your colleagues!”

Our State Championship Boys Basketball team attended the PTA’s Spring event on Saturday. They talked with students and families and signed autographs! Players, thank you for coming out and sharing your time with everyone!
- Shout Out to Krissy McCoy, Food Service Assistant and Mike Anderson, Director of Operations for securing resources to purchase stainless steel lunch trays for the MSHS and Penn Brook. Over the next couple of months we are going to transition from styrofoam trays to reusable lunch trays. The MSHS will begin using them on June 2, 2025 with Penn Brook a week behind on June 9, 20205. This exciting initiative is made possible through a generous grant secured in partnership with Amber from New England Zero Waste and Plastics Free Restaurants.org. We’re so grateful for their support in helping us take this important step towards reducing our environmental impact.
Budget Update: I have not mentioned the Budget in the last few Blog postings. The two school budgets that were presented and adopted by the town have not changed. The School Department’s Override Budget is expected to support the growth of the programming, meet contractual obligations and modernize the district for the next 3-5 years. This means we will not be asking for additional funds beyond the 2.5% during this time period. I am hopeful that the townspeople of Georgetown choose to get out and vote assuring the results reflect the greater community’s vision of the town.
YouTube: I want to remind everyone that we now have a Georgetown Public School YouTube page. The content includes an expansion of our Spotlight on Excellence videos. You can watch it here!
