History was made for Georgetown High School’s Boys’ Basketball team on March 15, 2025, when they captured the state title for the first time in program history.
The #6 Georgetown Royals faced #5 Monument Mountain High School for the Division IV state championship, ending in a 61-54 win for the Royals at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.
The Royals were led by standout player Irvin Zapata, who scored a game-high 22 points. Brendan Loewen added 19 points to the scoreboard, 9 of those being in the crucial final eight minutes of the game.
Georgetown entered the tournament as the #6 seed with a 14-6 record, while Monument Mountain came to the tournament with an impressive 18-2 record. Despite the season record differences, the Royals’ composure, defensive intensity and late-game execution proved decisive in the championship matchup.
The team’s championship season was officially celebrated on Dec. 20, when Georgetown High School hosted a ring ceremony and banner unveiling before the Royals’ home game against Rockport High School.
Players, coaches and families gathered to honor the program’s historic Division IV state title. Following the ceremony, the Royals capped off the night with a victory over Rockport, giving the fans another reason to celebrate the program’s success.
“The ring ceremony was a special night for many reasons. It was a chance to honor an incredible season and a special group of young men and the awesome journey they took the town and school on culminating in GHS’ first boys basketball title. It was awesome to have the graduating seniors from that team be recognized one more time for their accomplishments,” said first year head coach Kevin Fair. “But more importantly it was an opportunity to honor and remember Matthew Torgersen. Matty’s number 11 is now retired. Matt embodied what it is to be a Royal. He was selfless, relentless, and the ultimate teammate. It was fitting that he be recognized the same night as the 2025 State Champions as they all knew him as a teammate and a leader. He was and is an inspiration to us all and we miss him dearly.”
Momentum from the championship has carried its way over to the 2025-2026 season with the Royals opening the year 4-0.
With a championship banner now part of the program’s legacy, the Georgetown Royals enter the season not only as defending state champions, but as a team setting a new standard for success.
